Adventure awaits!

Beckett Lawson -
I am excited to be the first junior climber for Summits of Hope. Over the last few years my dad, Jason Lawson, has completed multiple climbs with Summits of Hope, including the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro and 2 trips to Nepal’s Everest Base Camp. He is heading back to Mt. Kilimanjaro this year. It is my dream to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa however, due to the high elevation I need to wait until I’m an adult. As an alternative to prepare me for Africa, I have chosen to climb an alpine peak in Squamish known as Sky Pilot. If you are driving to Vancouver from Whistler this is the highest peak above the Sea to Sky Gondola. Sky Pilot isn’t a regular climb, it is a technical mountaineering experience. It will push me to learn technical climbing that involves travel over the Stadium Glacier and the West Ridge, using harnesses, ropes, crampons and ice axes.

In my grade 10 year at Brockton School we are provided an opportunity to complete a personal project. I have chosen to raise funds for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as my personal project. When I was 3 years old (I am 14 years old now) I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer that affects 7 out of 100,000 children. I went through many years of chemotherapy and am relieved to say I am cancer free as of September 2017. For my personal project I wanted to do something that would allow me to give back to the people that helped me at BC Children's Hospital while I was going through my treatment. As well, I hope my story and climb helps support families and children that are going through cancer treatment. My goal is to raise $10,000 to support kids like me who deserve the opportunity to conquer their mountains the way I plan to conquer mine.

For my climb I personally cover all my climbing costs so that anything I can raise ensures that 100% of donations go directly to BC Children's Hospital Foundation through my Summits of Hope profile on behalf of my Sky Pilot Climb. A tax receipt is provided. I know donating is a very personal decision so I thank you in advance for any consideration you can make to support kids like me fighting for a chance to live like I now have the gift to do. Thank you!

After a steep and rolling climb, our Kilimanjaro 2023 team has made it into Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 14,200 ft. Today, they went on an acclimatization hike (a hike with no packs, just water) to acclimatize to the altitude while enjoying a beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro! At the previous camp (Kikelewa Camp) they flew their prayer flags with the names of loved ones and kids from BC Children's Ho ... Read full post >
