Everybody has a mountain to climb...

KILIMANJARO, located in Tanzania and bordering Kenya, is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain known to man.  The summit of Uruhu is at 19,341 ft or 5,895 meters.

Surrounding Kilimajaro are some of Africa's best known animal reserves.

It is a dormant volcano where you can hike for more than 90 kilometers, gain 4000 meters in altitude, traverse rain forest, moorland, alpine desert, snow fields and ice cliffs! Despite Kilimanjaro being located just 3 degrees south of  the equator, an ice cap covers the Kibo crater year round.  It will be a truly unforgettable and fascinating adventure.

Summits of Hope first climbed Kilimanjaro successfully with the 2001 Summits of Hope Expedition.  In 2005, we once again succeeded reaching the 'Roof of Africa' and more importantly, raised over $180,000.  The 2006 expedition has even loftier goals!!

The Machame route that we will be taking is probably the most scenic and most beautiful route to the summit, but is more physically challenging than the Normal Marangu route. The day hikes are longer and steeper. The scenic traverse of the Western Breach offers some stunning views!  Check back for pictures!
